30 Jul The Skirt Trends to Try in 2024

Having remained a somewhat underrated category for some time, skirts have been having quite the resurgence in recent seasons. From conversation-starting micro-minis to scene-stealing maxi lengths, once things started heating up in the skirt department the excitement kept flowing and 2024 shows no sign of a slowdown. A range of hem lengths and playful, statement silhouettes, as well as some more serious ones (hello pencil skirts) are bringing skirts into full focus yet again for spring/summer 2024. Read on for all the new and evolving skirt trends to try in 2024. Plus, of course, where to snap them up now whatever your budget…

Bubble Skirts

First seen making a reappearance at Prada and Khaite in 2023, the style made further buzzy outings for spring/summer 2024. At Bottega Veneta a soft fringed knee-length bubble skirt was paired with a cute cardigan, there were multiple takes at Altuzarra including a minimalist satin midi and oversized bandeau bubble hem dress, and at MSGM a playful bubble mini was paired with pulled-up socks and a structured blazer. For Autumn/Winter 2024, this trend is going nowhere either. Miu Miu sent floral bubble skirts down the runway paired with ankle boots and an array of jacket styles from neat cardigans to bombers, barn jackets, and puffers layered over knits.

Speaking of drop waists, this fresh silhouette is going nowhere and it’s so elegant. A key dress trend for 2024, the drop waist also features heavily in skirt trends. Whether mini, midi, or maxi, it’s not all about hemlines, as proved by this statement nostalgic silhouette.

Maxi Skirts

We know you know about the resurgent maxi skirt trend already, but if you haven’t invested yet, things are evolving. For Spring/Summer 2024, there was Etro’s sweeping maxi skirt and crisp shirt combination and Louis Vuitton’s floaty layered maxi skirts with bombers. Acne Studios’ minimalist maxi column skirts were paired with tank tops or rib knits, and there were more 90s references via Staud’s bubble maxi and slip skirts paired with simple straight-neck tops. Valentino paired column maxi skirts with oversized blazers in simple black or white, also seen at Givenchy.

Full Skirts

One of Carrie Bradshaw’s signature looks, full skirts have been making a comeback for a while, thanks maybe to Prada’s incredibly elegant AW23 full white midi skirts with origami flowers. For Spring/Summer 2024 look to Bottega Veneta’s full fringed skirt paired with a crisp shirt to know this trend is going nowhere, or Erdem’s full printed skirt with cropped top, pointy slingbacks, and cardigan draped over the shoulders. 16Arlington and Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood both showed gorgeous bustle effects shooting from the hip of cinched dresses, proving hip interest is still very much a thing.

Sheer Skirts

The sheer skirt has still got our attention this season and the budget-conscious among us will be happy to hear the high street is fully on board offering up some rather fabulous options. Completely sheer pencil skirts were shown at Acne Studios and Prada for SS24, and came low rise at Supriya Lele, whilst sheer midi’s were embellished at Dries Van Noten and again at Prada. If you don’t fancy baring all, embellished semi-sheer skirts at Altuzarra were paired with cable knits, and the feather-light layered maxi skirts at Louis Vuitton worn with oversized bombers left a little more to the imagination. The message is clear, sheer skirts are evolving.

Pencil Skirts

Pencil skirts have been popping up all over the spring/summer 2024 runways (see Givenchy and Valentino for perfectly pared-back versions) proving this is another silhouette that still has legs. The corporate dressing theme also plays into this trend, but this season Saint Laurent’s stripped-back cotton pencil skirts worn belted with equally simple silhouettes on top, from plain tank tops, to sheer camis and voluminous blouses, showed pencil skirts are not just for the office.

Elevated Denim Skirts

We know you know the denim skirt has been back in a BIG way. Preferably a long denim skirt, paired with everything you would normally wear your jeans with. The silhouettes are getting more elevated this season though, with elegant fuller silhouettes, chic dark denim, and sharp pleats bringing a contemporary twist to this staple.

White Skirts

Ever since we saw Prada’s aforementioned perfect white skirt come down the runway for Autumn/Winter 2023, we wanted one. A summer-ready white skirt paired with a knit and pumps (as per Prada’s look) works perfectly for cooler climes until the mercury rises, and offers a chic alternative to darker shades for spring. The spring/summer collections offered up plenty of all-white inspirations, from a white column maxi look at Sportmax, to Eudon Choi’s pretty flared Broderie Anglais maxi and LaQuan Smith’s va va voom white croc-embossed looks.

Leather Skirts

Look to Givenchy’s sassy all-black look consisting of leather pencil skirt with sheer knee-high socks, low-cut voluminous blouse and matching boxy blazer, or Miu Miu’s low slung belted leather midi skirts worn with midriff baring leather tube tops and flat thong sandals for proof that leather is big news for spring/summer 2024. Things got creative at Prada with a patched-effect leather pencil skirt and jacket smattered with swirls of crystals. Then there were the top-to-toe leather looks at Coach consisting of cropped leather jackets with coordinating maxi skirts, and the oversized versions at Khaite. Though a simple A-line mini will always make sense, and we are still coveting a gorgeous (Proenza-inspired) full leather midi, the leather pencil skirt whether midi or maxi also appears to be dominating for the season ahead.
