25 Dec How to Wear the Red Tights Trend? 11 Red Tights (& Socks) Outfits That Will Convince You…
Not since Bottega Green has a hue taken hold of the fashion crowd with such force as the colour red has in 2023. Set only to continue in 2024, if you have managed to resist so far, the onset of the festive season is sure to have reeled you in on this trend. Whilst Pantone’s colour of 2023 might have been “Viva Magenta”, it’s red thats got us all fired up this year. One glance at Instagram or TikTok will confirm red has been quickly and enthusiastically taken up as the “pop” of choice, or indeed fully committed to in head-to-toe ensembles. And if fire hydrant red is too loud, maybe the rich burgundy and dark cherry shades seen at Gucci, Prada, Bottega Veneta, and Saint Laurent (amongst others) spring/summer 2024 collections will be more your cup of (fruit) tea.
Whilst there are many ways to wear red, a festive red dress for example, or a choice accessory, red tights were the fun trend seen at Gucci, Miu Miu, Burberry, Chanel, and Hermès, that you might not have initially expected to strut so quickly off the runway and into our everyday wardrobes. But strut they have. And the red tights/socks outfits are spreading like wildfire, as is the case with all the pops of red right now. It seems we really can’t get enough. Whilst one might initially be dubious about recreating 00’s Indie Sleaze moments or leaning into Blair Waldorf style, fancy hosiery is here to stay, so we thought we better dig into some red tights outfits that might convince you of the trend during this (currently) festive and generally fiery-hued winter we are having.
How to Style the Red Tights & Socks Trend
Whilst often styled in monochromatic get-ups on the catwalk or by celebrities, influencers have generally taken more of a statement-piece approach to this trending accessory. And the best thing about this trend? It’s such an affordable tweak to your winter wardrobe whilst still packing a major fashion punch. Don’t overthink it, just switch in a pair of red tights where you would normally plump for black (or socks if you want to start smaller or, you know, be warm…) and you are good to go. Ideally paired with a slimline shoe such as a Mary Jane, pointed toe slingback, or a staple loafer. This is also a look that translates well into your spring wardrobe. Lighter hosiery tends to pair a lot better with spring ready/transitional outfits than heavy black tights, which can look a little jarring paired with your flouncy summer wares.
And btw don’t stop at red, hosiery in all its many fun forms is having something of a revival with a whole spectrum of shades, patterns, and lengths gaining popularity. Look to the white lace tights and knee socks at Jacquemus’ AW23 show and sassy underwear-centric looks at Dolce & Gabbana SS24 for a summery mood. Then there were the sheer green, blue, and red tights worn in tonal looks at Acne Studios SS24. And of course, the no-trouser trend sparked by Miu Miu’s AW23 knitwear-clad models, showcasing sheer coloured tights in shades of pistachio, peach, plum, and pale blue. But more on that later, if you want to jump on the red bandwagon whilst it’s spicy hot, these red tights (and socks) outfits offer great inspiration.
Red Tights + Business Casual
Lean into this season’s business core trend and pair your red tights with shiny pointed shoes and a slick pencil skirt. Also, perfect when you have an actual office to head to. Add a 00s-style minimalist shoulder bag, slim knit, and sunglasses to finish the look. The Alice band adds a Blair Waldorf sprinkle to the whole ensemble.
Pencil skirts are trending once more for 2023/2024 and this one is basic enough to pair perfectly with a pair of red tights. Also check out Mango’s slit pencil skirt which comes in sizes 4-26.
