18 Sep The 5 Transitional Jacket Trends that Matter for Autumn 2023
Though summer may be having a (wonderful) second wind, September can only mean one thing, cosy season is just around the corner. And that means, layering is about to become necessary. In fact, even though it feels like we are having a second chance at summer, once evening sets in the September chill is certainly in the air. Once that chill hits, it is spelling jacket weather and it’s got us thinking about those all-important 2023 jacket trends. Here are the 6 you need to know for autumn/winter 2023.
2023 Jacket Trend – Leather Lives On
Last year saw the triumphant return of many a trend, the ballet flat, the maxi skirt, and retro trainers among them. The leather biker was one such trend to have quite the resurgence in 2022, and 2023 is no different. Though the leather jacket never went away, it hadn’t been quite so prolific in its many varied forms. This season sees biker, bomber, and trench iterations return to the fore, as well as some incredibly pared-back and sleek versions that minimalists will love. Not to mention a plethora of tasty autumn hues and interesting finishes…
If you were to dream up the perfect cropped biker, would it look a little like this? The wide sleeves and oversized fit balanced with the cropped silhouette are a winning look. As is the matching zip-up midi skirt.
If this is out of your price range or you prefer faux shearling, then look to H&M’s expensive-looking reversible jacket.
Distressed finishes are big news and this brown faux-leather version has a great oversized fit. For an authentic distressed look, there are some great vintage oversized bikers to be snapped up like this 90s Etsy Option.
Keep it simple with Aligne’s sleek Kerr leather jacket.
Monki’s dreamy burgundy has just been restocked so move fast… It also comes in a distressed black option.
Mango has some winning leather jackets right now.
You have no doubt seen Acne Studios cropped leather bomber pop up on your feed.
This jacket has a 90s minimalist feel. If you are in the market for something more oversized, check out this XL Vintage Zip Through Jacket.
The Bomber Jacket
Fashions love affair with the bomber jacket is only set to continue with so many iterations on offer. Whether distressed leather, oversized, or luxe wool with an elevated finish, you can’t go wrong with a bomber this, or indeed, any season.
For SS24 it’s all about the cropped jacket so you will be in on the trend early with COS’ cropped bomber. See also Mango’s structured shoulder bomber.
Tick off multiple trends with a cropped leather bomber jacket. This petrol-colored one from Acne Studios is such a dreamboat.
Another high street hit from Mango. If this brown leather version is out of your price range, check out this faux leather distressed black version.
An oversized version is great for layering.
Jacquemus cropped padded bomber will keep you cosy too. If your budget is a little tighter, Mango’s cream quilted bomber is worth a look.
Mango’s textured wool effect bomber looks so luxe in cream and also comes in black. For something lighter and similarly luxe-looking, we also love Mango’s cropped cargo pocket bomber.
Go classic with this cropped khaki bomber. It also comes in a luxe-looking navy. For a more budget-friendly iteration Mango’s classic oversized bomber comes in black and beige
This Ganni button-up satin bomber will work so well for evening too.
If you’re a fan of the full denim look, Zara’s denim bomber is hitting the nail on the head. Feel free to add trousers to the look, or not…
Jacket trends 2023 – Get Waisted
Though our beloved oversized blazers are going nowhere, this season it’s time to make way for the hourglass silhouette. If you’re looking for a blazer update, then a waisted version has the style set’s seal of approval. Elsewhere wool and denim jackets are also getting nipped or belted at the waist for a new season update.
H&M’s budget friendly blazer comes in 3 colours,
Chic and a little more substantial than a blazer for those more wintry days. For a budget version, see H&M’s belted beige jacket that comes in sizes XXS-4XL and 3 colours. If you aren’t looking to make a purchase you can always add a belt to your existing jackets.
This grey waisted wool blazer looks so expensive.
This is so elevated for H&M and grey is trending hard for AW23. It also comes in light beige if you aren’t a fan of grey.
The Frankie Shop’s Collette Hourglass Blazer comes in camel or black and the silhouette is amazing.
It’s not just blazers and coats getting the hourglass treatment as this elevated Ganni denim jacket proves. This wool version in a beautiful sky blue is also so dreamy.
So gorgeous. For a slightly more budget-friendly version, see this Reformation double-breasted blazer too.
Pinstripe is trending hard for AW23 so this cinched waist blazer is hitting multiple trends at once.
Trench 2.0
It goes without saying that a trench coat is a transitional staple, but this season’s trenches are a little more jazzy than your classic camel number. The Autumn/Winter runways saw a whole variety show of colours, prints, fabrics, and fits to rejuvenate the classic trench. If it was ever the time to add a new style to your rotation, it’s now.
Channel Alexa’s recent fashion week look in this sassy patent trench coat.
This dreamy trench coat from Chloé’s collaboration with Barbour is ready to take on all the elements and tick off two trends at once with the outdoorsy style that is set to be big for SS24.
& Other Stories relaxed trench coat comes in beige and this dreamy khaki.
There is always room for classic camel and this is such a cool version from Reformation. Try Arket’s similar silhouette for a more budget-friendly take.
Aligne’s Gilda trench coat is a modern classic. It comes in camel, rust brown, black, and this delicious trending sage green.

If you are looking for something a little different the subtle puff sleeves on this vintage black trench coat provide a twist.
Loewe’s floor-length trench is an elevated take on the classic style.
You can’t beat a vintage Burberry classic.
Bouclé
This ladylike number has been cropping up all over our feeds and has been hastily adopted by the high street, with new arrivals cropping up from Mango to & Other Stories. Early peeks at SS24 trends show the trend is set to continue in matching sets and an array of colours.
Obsessed. This also comes in black, but the dreamy texture looks extra luxe in this light version.
The details are so good on this Isabel Marant jacket. If this is out of your budget look to Mango’s mottled black and white version.
This Mango set is so cute. It will also be perfect for next spring.
& Other Stories longer-line version is very chic.
This comes in 3 colours but the red is so on-point this season and looks great with dark denim.
H&M’s budget-friendly iteration also comes in light blue, but this mottled black and white looks way more expensive than it is.
Is it just me, or is there always something comforting about coming across a bit of vintage St. Michael? Not to mention, this colour is delightful.
The contrast trim on this vintage jacket is a delight.
Scarf Jackets & Luxe Wool
The cosy appeal of this season’s big scarf trend is definitely one for those nippy days and will see you well into winter. The scarf jacket has been bubbling away for a few seasons, but 2023 is the time to take the plunge if you haven’t already with so many dreamy options on offer. Aside from scarf details, the quiet luxury trend has led the way for a whole host of plush-looking wool jackets in minimal but luxe-looking silhouettes that will last for years to come.
This is so chic. The black is sold out so move fast on this expensive-looking cream, version.
