27 Sep The Autumn Winter Trends You Can Finally Wear Now
So I know our feeds are lighting up with SS23 collections already, but it is officially Autumn in the real world! Which means the mourning period for summer is over, and it’s time to get down to it and buckle ourselves into some seriously fun autumn/winter trends. Whilst we will miss the simplicity and freedom of throwing on 2 items and skipping out the door, there is something to be said for the creativity involved in the more intricate layering of the cooler seasons. AW22 is not skipping on the variety, so there is something to look forward to for everyone, aside from the start of red wine season and Christmas cheer. As fashion moves away from the “new season/new trend” model of old, there are a lot of themes reappearing and evolving from past seasons. The many creative interpretations, mean the focus is much more on individual expression. Basically you really can’t put a fashion foot wrong this season. But even if there is no reason to rush out for a whole new wardrobe, it’s still fun to remind ourselves of the joys ahead for the autumn/winter season. So here is our round up of the key AW22 fashion trends we are excited to finally wear now the nights are drawing in. Bring on the layers.
The White Tank
Let’s start with the basics, literally. The simplest way to update your wardrobe for AW22 is the humble white tank. You may have already invested in a Loewe’s sell out tank in summer, or maybe got your hands on Prada’s covetable number. If not, the high street has many iterations to make this simple addition to your life easy. That is, if you don’t already own a few yourself. Pair with a sheer pencil skirt for Prada vibes, or baggy jeans for the Bottega look. A white tank is a perfect partner to the seasons 90s maxi skirts and favoured loose and low trousers for nostalgic minimalist style. It’s the perfect piece to layer under an oversized shirt or granny cardigan, with one of the new season chunky chains. However you look at it, this is one versatile and easy way to update your look.
Get the runway look. Fast, because this is basically sold out everywhere.
Arket is always a great bet for good old staples like this white rib racer tank top.
As is Totême for a perfect basic.
Me + Em also have a beautiful cashmere and silk tank thats so perfect for the cooler temperatures.
Hot Pink Moment
As we already discussed, hot pink is having a hot moment and you can’t fail to notice it. Streetstylers have been turning out enthusiastically in head-to-toe hot pink looks at the SS23 shows, and from the looks of the spring collections the passion for pink won’t be slowing down just yet. If you’re budget doesn’t stretch to Valentino, the high street has also fallen head over heels for hot pink, so you wont be short of beautiful pink pieces to add to your wardrobe. From bold tailoring to fabulously frivolous party wear and stand-out accessories, hot pink has won us over. And if it hasn’t, just give it time.
Go straight to the source with a little something from the now iconic Valentino Pink PP collection. This gorgeous silk organza pussy bow blouse ties in such a beautiful way with a whimsical and elegant bow at the back. The head-to-toe look is a show stopper, and those platform boots….
This Zara hot pink high neck knit maxi dress is ticking so many boxes. Imagine it taking centre stage with an all black look on a dreary winter day. So good. It’s selling fast, but keep yourself notified for restocks on different sizes. In other options, the viral skims soft lounge dress now comes with sleeves and in hot pink, so that is certainly worth a look if you like a more form fitting silhouette.
The perfect pink party dress?
Update your oversized shirting offer for winter in this corduroy hot pink number from COS. Be snappy as its selling fast.
Rainbow Reign
Aside from hot pink, dopamine dressing and rainbow brights are going nowhere. Red, purple, autumnal oranges and yellows, gorgeous shades of cerulean and cobalt blue continue to be seen across all categories. And of course fashions love affair with green is going strong, with various zesty and fresh shades still popular. Basically channel the rainbow and you’re good to go.
Red is having a moment and so should this Carrie Bradshaw style ruffled dress with rose embellished halterneck.
Bright tailoring was big news on the AW22 catwalks. Why not lean into Pantones colour of the year with these gorgeous tailored trousers from & Other Stories? Pair with their cult mock-neck knit in this new lilac shade and you have got yourself a yummy top-to-toe look, that looks ready to walk the runway itself.
This is so deliciously retro. The details on this shirt are amazing. It would really be a shame not to do the top-to-toe look when it looks so perfectly 70s as a set.
Cord is certainly having a moment and it looks so good in this beautiful shade of blue.
The Bigger the Better Bomber Jackets
I am sure you have noticed, bombers are back in a big way. And they are bigger and better than ever too. Hopefully you have an old staple bomber hiding in the back of your wardrobe, ready to resume its position in your autumn transitional jacket rotation. If not, there are plenty of designer and high street options ready to fill the space. From luxe iterations at Prada, old-school and oversized at Isabel Marant and Sacai, and of course Frankie shop’s already influencer approved option. There is a big and beautiful bomber jacket out there for everyone.
Frankie Shop’s jackets are always a good bet and this Astra oversized bomber jacket is no exception. It also comes in classic black.
A timeless option.
Everything about this Loewe padded leather bomber jacket is so dreamy.
This aubergine colour is a subtle way to add a bit of colour to your outfits, whilst still being quite neutral.
Leather Lover
From traditional biker jackets, to this seasons favourite bomber and trench iterations, leather jackets are firmly back on the agenda. It’s not just your outerwear getting the leather (faux or otherwise) treatment this season however. From textured fringed skirts at Bottega, chic corsetry at Fendi, to leather biker jackets and matching trousers at Celine, leather showed up in a multitude of ways in the AW22 collections. Including high shine at Versace, fetish style at Christopher Kane and an enthusiastic lean into full blown biker mode elsewhere. The moto jacket made a return at Dior, whilst Balmain and LaQuan Smith showed moto pants complete with zippers and pockets. At Coperni multi-pocket leather mini skirts were paired with over-the-knee socks and buttoned up shirts. Boots also got the reinforced treatment this season, so you can pull your biker boots out of the cupboard. Perfect for stomping through the autumn leaves.
How perfect is this glossy burgundy leather trench? Burgundy leather is definitely having a moment, just look to Bottega Veneta’s similarly glossy trench in a rich deep red shade.
A leather shirt dress is something of a must have this season. you also need to see the COS burgundy iteration that just landed from their AW22 runway show.
Commit to the full look with head-to-toe biker-inspired leather complete with zips and buckles, but keep the silhouette sleek like this look from Khaite.
These high waisted, wide leg leather trousers from Reformation are so chic.
Maxi Lengths
Floor sweeping drama was seen everywhere from The Row to Louis Vuitton, and Altuzarra to Saint Laurent, paired with oversized bikers, blazers or equally glamorous long, sweeping coats. If you need a break from trousers, or a move on from mini skirts, give a maxi hemline a go. From minimalist 90s inspired column skirts, to flowing silky fabrics pooling around your feet, this is one versatile style.
Cut-outs continue to be a popular feature and these subtle waist details are adding some serious sass to this sleek maxi skirt from Mônot.
This Mango Maxi Ruffle Dress sold out in the pink, so be snappy if you want in on this glamorous red version. It’s already sold out on some sizes, but sign up for stock notifications. Or there is always the timeless black option…
This pop of colour maxi skirt looks so good with all black.
This look is all the good kinds of drama. The plunging neckline, ruching and velvet flower embellishment make this Saint Laurent satin gown a showtopper. Maxi coats, faux fur and flower embellishments are also big news this season.
Big Knit Energy
The AW22 catwalks were awash with touch-me textures, from ultra fuzzy, to fringed and all encompassing. You have to love a built in hood too, as an extension of the divisive (but in my humble opinon, fabulous) balaclava trend of last autumn/winter. Aside from ultra strokeable textures and oversized silhouettes, home spun vibes are still a big theme with fringed wrap shawls and ponchos making appearances at Gabriela Hearst. We all love a knit come autumn/winter, and this is your excuse to make it big, soft and cosy af.
Make it big, bold, bright and fuzzy with this joyful striped Marni knit sweater.
This oversized cardigan has such an unusual colour block finish. It’s perfect for bridging the gap between seasons too if you aren’t ready for a coat yet.
Make a statement in this crafty looking fringed Stella McCartney knit thats made to move.
So soft and so chic.
Punk Vs Preppy
The Y2k influence continues, with a discerningly “Gossip Girl” like feel this season. There are preppy/punk mini kilts, cut off tennis skirts at Miu Miu, off kilter ties at Louis Vuitton and of course, the knee (or the over the knee) socks. There are also the decidedly more grown up preppy vibes of loose tailoring, ties and a choice beret. Channel Blair, Serena, or Jenny Humphrey in all her Indie Sleaze glory, and one way or another you will be on point.
Lean into the look with an oversized check overcoat, matching pleated micro mini and Miu Miu’s coveted ballet flats with socks. If you aren’t sure about the return of the ballet shoe, you might soon be convinced by the enthusiasm of SS23 show attendees. The elastic strap and socks are key. This girls definitely hatching a plan to sneak out the library.
In case your budget (and modesty) don’t stretch to Miu Miu’s pleated micro mini, COS has a chic pleated option that comes in black or a golden brown shade thats perfect for autumn. It looks great with a shirt, knitted tank and knee boots. Alternatively switch in loafers and socks, and style with a leather trench for a 70s/rebel edge.
Marine Serre’s checks with signature crescent moon, knitted tanks, leather and deconstructed and spliced tartans, very much had the preppy and the punk feels. I was feeling more “The Craft” than Gossip Girl, and I liked it. Pair this checked second skin top with a pleated skirt, loafers and socks for a cool and easy way to do the look.
This waistcoat is saying bookish, but stylish. How good does it look with the 90s style maxi skirt? COS is a great place to pick up on the 90s minimalist style, that was also prevalent through the AW22 collections.
Y2k Rages On
Gen Z’s nostalgia for the glory days of y2k fashion rages on and the catwalks are here for it. With ultra-low waistlines, ultra-high hemlines, flesh-flashing crop tops, sheer elements and visible lingerie, we are in the full swing of the 2000s hey day and the Euphoria effect is real. Look to 16Arlington, Connor Ives, Supriya Lele, Poster Girl and Nensi Dojaka for inspiration. Or look to your own wardrobe for the evidence you tried to hide if you were there the first time around. You might find the offending items have taken on a whole new shine again.
Float like a butterfly in this dreamy Demi Couture gown from Connor Ives. It is upcycled from vintage sequinned butterfly tops and finished with textural crochet trims. Could it get more Y2k?
Of course, a corset is essential to the look and this silver metallic version will be perfect for party season.
A cut-out, form-fitting black mini dress is an essential. Added straps are a plus.
Low waisted and micro mini skirts are going strong, as well as head to toe denim fabrications.
Oversized Overything
Bold shouldered tailoring is nothing new, but it’s getting bigger. Jumbo blazers at Acne, Louis Vuitton and Valentino were pumped up to new proportions with extra long sleeves and sloping shoulders, a new detail to note if you’re looking for a way to refresh the look. Aside from everyones favourite oversized blazers, coats came supersized and long, a perfect match for this seasons floor skimming hemlines. Don’t be afraid to try the oversized look head-to-toe too, see Khaite’s baggy jeans paired with a strong shouldered, structured and oversized blazer.
Sloping shoulders, extra long sleeves and perfectly oversized. Now you just need your wader style over-the-knee boots and you are ready for action.
Some baggy jeans are going to be key to the whole situation this autumn/winter.
Make your overcoat oversized and strong shouldered this season. This Massimo Dutti vibrant wool blend coat is so gorgeous paired with all black and contrasting textures.
This Topshop slouchy suit has a such a relaxed 90s look. Wear the jacket with the matching trousers for the full effect.
Fashion Hoods
Knitted hoods and balaclavas were a surprise runway hit last Autumn/Winter, and it seems designers are not done with this fun accessory yet. For AW22 they were mostly slim-fit, knitted and incorporated into sleek monochromatic looks. So practical and unexpectedly chic.
Make it cream coloured and cashmere for ultimate luxury.
This fluffy textured hood from Arket looks so soft.
The tie detail on this responsible cashmere knitted hood adds a little something extra.
If you want to add a pop of colour, this bright red knitted hood from Arket is so cute.
Party Season
Sheer fabrics, cut-outs, metallics, embellishments, feathers and fringing, not to mention many a party ready look turned out in this seasons favourite hot pink. Make not mistake its party season (although, when isn’t it these days?) Sheer and sequinned numbers sashayed down the runway at 16Arlington, Knwls, and LaQuan Smith, whilst rhinestones were the embellishment of choice at Area and Versace. Cut-outs are as daring as ever, as well as corsets a plenty just about everywhere you can think of. These fringed and bedazzled clothes were made to move, so get ready to hit the dance floor. Oh and don’t forget your opera gloves. No, seriously.
Its velvet season and what better way to wear it, than complete with cut-outs (still very much going strong) and a cascade of beautiful flowers down the front. This Magda Butrym mini dress is such a showstopper.
Take tips from the styling and layer this bright sequinned crop top over a sheer second skin top. Sheer textures with well placed embellishments is a theme that is set to carry on in SS23. If you are searching for partywear, & Other Stories is so on point right now. You also need to see this bronze sequinned stunner of a dress we featured last week.
Add this sequinned cape from The Vampires Wife to literally anything to make it party ready. And I imagine, have the most fun night of your life. This little number will live in your wardrobe forever. The platforms are also so dreamy
Feathers are still a strong partywear choice for AW22 and this oyster coloured blouse with removable feather trims is so elegant. Wear with a mini skirt and platforms, or dress up your loose trousers or jeans for evening with this chic blouse.
