15 Apr The Trainer Trends Taking Over in 2024
There has been no shortage of major shoe trends to obsess over in recent seasons, from the triumphant return of the ballerina flat to the naked shoe trend that is going mainstream this spring/summer. Of all the shoe-shaped trends, however, it has to be the humble trainer that caused the most footwear-related frenzy in 2023 and into 2024. From the hotly-anticipated trainer collaborations to the TikTok beloved aesthetics and next-level ‘dad’ trends, there has been a lot to chew over lately and things are looking no less feverish when it comes to the world of trainer trends in 2024. These are the 7 trainer trends taking over in 2024 and where to snap them up.
Trainer trends 2024 – Retro Trainers
The Adidas Samba had a (major) moment last year becoming the shoe nobody could live without following the Wales Bonner x Adidas collaboration. In 2024 the new drop ensured the same level of dedication amongst the fashion set (the leopard print!). Other similar retro styles have been receiving as much attention, with the buzzy Gucci x Adidas collaboration giving the Gazelle a similar boost. The array of fun colours ensure the Gazelle (or indeed, Handball Spezial…) never get boring. Whatever style you choose, you will be tackling one of 2024’s key trainer trends if you plump for a retro, football-inspired trainer this year. It’s all about those 5-a-side vibes. And if you’re not feeling football fever, any retro sport you fancy should do the trick.
Shop Retro Trainers:
If you got your hands on the latest adidas x Wales Bonner Samba drop, we salute you.
The Adidas Originals Handball Spezial were first introduced in 1979 for elite handball players. Arguably, a solid-looking choice for the non-elite handball players among us. If you’re looking for an alternative to your black Sambas, this black suede pair are it.
The Gazelles also come in a host of fun colours to jazz up your outfits.
If you have worn your Gazelles, Sambas, or Spezials to death, the SL72s are a great retro alternative from Adidas coming in a range of tasty shades.
Harper’s Bazaar declared the Onitsuka Tiger the next big thing back in Spring, and the lack of sizes available suggests the Bella effect has taken hold of this cult style. Kaia Gerber has been spotted in the yellow and the Black & White make a versatile choice, as Bella herself attested to in recent outfits.
Loewe offers up an elevated take with their Flow Runner sneakers. This chocolate brown and white pair are also delightful…
The Nike Daybreak’s wonderfully retro vibes will put a spring in your step in this sunny 70s orange shade.
British heritage brand Gola’s sneakers have a low-key retro feel.
The reimagined retro 70s running New Balance 327 is an influencer favourite and the flash of burgundy here is a chic option.
Miu Miu’s minimalist and rather dainty suede sneakers have a vintage feel.
Trainer trends 2024 – Hiking Trainers
Call it Gorpcore or ‘quiet outdoors’, but the hiker sneaker trend is not set to go anywhere for 2024. If running sneakers or retro sporty kicks don’t fit the bill, these outdoorsy and practical-looking styles might be for you. It’s the new “dad” trainer trend on the block offering the ultimate blend of performance and style, and we are into it, as are Rhianna, Emily Ratajkowski, and Bella Hadid.
Shop Hiking Trainers:
Salomon’s frenzy-inducing XT-6 sneakers are trail-ready and suitably fashion-forward all at once. Ultra versatile in black, the upcoming MM6 Maison Margiela x Salomon collab will likely ensure we keep seeing Salomon’s gracing the feet of fashion folk for a while.

The Salomon ACS Pro Advanced style has got you covered for an ultra-techy 2000s feel and are ticking off the silver trend in this shade too. The blue and grey pair are also a nice choice.

Loewe’s artisanal flair meets ON’s high-performance technology in the Loewe x On Cloudtilt running shoes. With a chunky sole and made using recycled fibres, the ‘Cloudtilt’ sneakers feature both brands’ logos on the sides and tongue and are delicious in this berry shade, or any of these further 8 shades…
Trainer trends 2024 – Trending Coloured Trainers:
With so much time spent obsessing over trainers the past few seasons, it’s no wonder we’ve branched into a whole rainbow of shades, and with trending (and classic) styles like the Gazelles coming in such a fun array of colours its hard to resist adding a fun pop via our feet. Plump for trending shades, such as red (duh), yellow (the classic “Kill Bill” Onitsuka Tigers made yellow a sneaker shade to be seen in…), and silver (silver Wales Bonner `Sambas anyone?) and you will be right as rain. But for crying out loud, don’t actually wear them in the rain…
Shop Coloured Trainers:
Pink and red is the best combo. Nike’s retro ‘Cortez’ sneakers are a classic style that seems to be making yet another comeback this year. Also love the green and pink and burgundy options.
These are spring-ready. Also, check out this blue and yellow pair.
These preloved red Spezial suede sneakers are so pretty and also come in a vintage-looking green and blue.
We are not ready to say goodbye to silver.
Puma’s “Speedcat” sneakers, first introduced in 1981, are apparently set to conquer 2024 at lightning speed. Emily Ratajkowski has already been spotted in the sleek black and white and colour pop red most recently pairing them with micro shorts at NYFW.
The SL72s have been showing up all over celebrity and influencer feet alike and this cherry red pair is delicious, as is this fresh blue pair.
Inspired by traditional crafting Nike and Jacquemus created the J Force 1. They are especially appealing in this on-point shade of brown.
Joy in one swift move.
Summer shades.
Girly pink kicks are having a moment and this cute as candy pair fit the bill.
One of spring/summers unexpected trending shades, these violet Gazelles will look great paired with everything from denim to dresses.
Trainer trends 2024 – Sporty Trainers:
With ever more designer styles dropping, athletic-looking running trainers are going nowhere and the chunky dad shoe trend just keeps evolving. Asics and New Balance styles remain as popular as ever, and Bottega Veneta recently released the Orbit sneaker with a perfectly retro-futuristic sporty vibe.

Kendall Jenner has been spotted out in the silver, and Hailey Bieber is a fan of the green, but this Merlot is also a spot-on choice for this season.
These chunky sneakers from Adidas are a fresh update on styles from the label’s 2000s archive and this colourway will look great with spring-ready trending pastels.
ASICS’s ‘Gel-Kayano 14’ sneakers have been a TikTok hit thanks to their nostalgic/futuristic Y2k aesthetic.

The New Balance 2002R, a modern twist on 2000s running designs remains a stalwart choice for pairing with your everyday looks. With Elsa Hosk, Grece Ghanem, and Hailey Bieber all fans, your feet will be in good company.
The Cloudnova sneakers from On are a fusion of running tech with contemporary style.
Trainer trends 2024 – Sustainable Options
The increasing focus of designers on sustainability is leading to more innovation in fabrications and manufacturing processes. New types of sustainable fabrications like grape or mushroom leather, and repurposing of waste are lessening the environmental impact of the manufacturing process to create a more circular system that hopefully creates a lasting impact on the industry.
Shop Sustainable Trainers:
These minimalist Pangaia sneakers are made from grape leather created with repurposed waste from the wine industry and recycled rubber.

Trainer trends 2024 – Minimalist Moment
In contrast to all the bright pops, technical bells and whistles and unexpected textures, pared back trainers are sneaking back in, if they ever went away that is. Your trusty white trainers might have been neglected the past few seasons, but they never go out of style. This season there are new neutral colour ways (see trending brown…) and elevated takes from The Row and Toteme to consider if you’re feeling something a little quieter.
Shop Minimalist Trainers:
So luxe looking.
Your Sambas but fancier.

Based on the 1985 edition, Reebok’s white Club C Vintage trainers are paneled from smooth leather and set on a chunky off-white rubber sole, emulating retro tennis styles.
Trainer trends 2024 – The Icons
If you are looking for just one perfect pair of multitasking trainers to add to your forever wardrobe, these iconic styles are always relevant. Never far from the fashion radar, a Nike Air Force 1, Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star, or Stan Smith are the nostalgic kicks that never go out of style.
